Psoriasis Awareness Month
August is Psoriasis Awareness Month!
Psoriasis is an autoimmune skin condition that affects more than 3% of the world population according to The National Psoriasis Foundation. There are many different types of psoriasis including plaque, guttate, nail, scalp, inverse, pustular, and erythrodermic.
The skin's cell production with psoriasis is accelerated, causing inflammation, itching, and flaking. There is no direct cause for psoriasis but common triggers for flare ups according to the Mayo Clinic are infections, cuts or burns, smoking, environmental factors, and specific medications. Psoriasis flare ups come in phases, and the severity of these flare ups can differ each time.
Symptoms of psoriasis can range in onset age as early as 1 year to late adulthood, affecting men and women both. Currently, there is no cure for psoriasis but topical creams and treatments can be used to slow the rapid production of the skin cells and alleviate symptoms.
