5 natural moisturizers for summertime shine

It's especially important to keep skin moisturized during the summer months for two important reasons:

  1. We're outside more and we sweat more, which means our skin is more prone to outdoor toxins and irritants.
  2. Summer clothes expose more skin and no one wants to be ashy out here in these streets.

Many of us have been trained to use lotion as a moisturizer. I've shared my thoughts on this before. Now I want to leave you with a few tips on how to choose a moisturizer that nourishes the skin and leaves you glowing and radiant.

What is a good skin moisturizer?

A good skin moisturizer depends on the type of skin you have because what's "good" will alleviate the skin challenges you may have. If you have oily or normal skin, you don't want too heavy of a moisturizer. If you have dry skin, you don't want a moisturizer with ingredients that dry the skin out.

Where you apply the moisturizer also makes a difference in its effectiveness. For example, if you have oily skin on your face, you may not use the same moisturizer for your face and body.

Natural herbs for skin moisturizer

1. Rosehip oil. Rosehip oil is ideal for the face because it is light like sebum, the natural oil your skin produces. Yet it's packed with nourishing properties that help with moisturization.

2. Chamomile oil. Chamomile oil is great for the entire body because of its healing properties. It eliminates scars and dark spots because it acts as an anti-inflammatory and antiseptic while it locks in moisture.

3. Sunflower oil. Sunflower oil is light, non-greasy, and easy for the skin to absorb. It's full of Vitamins A and E, which encourage skin cell health and fight acne-causing bacteria.

4. Jojoba oil. Another oil that resembles natural sebum. Jojoba is a plant that is rich in antioxidants that promote skin cell rejuvenation.

5. Evening primrose oil. Contains naturally occurring compounds that activate microcirculation, slow down aging, and protect from UV damage. Also helps clear rosacea and acne. 

How to use a skin moisturizer

Moisturizers are good when the skin is still a little damp, like after toweling off after a shower or just after you wash your face. The moisturizer acts as a sealant to keep the dampness locked into the skin.

As a general rule, you should use lighter moisturizers during the day and heavier moisturizers at night.
